Wally Bullington served ACU for 39 years as football player, assistant football coach, head football coach and athletic director before he retired from the university's athletic staff in 1988. Bullington received both his B.S. degree in 1953 and M.Ed. in 1956 from ACU.
In nine years as the head football coach at ACU, his teams had a 62-32-2 record. Four of his nine teams were nationally-ranked; he coached the Wildcats to their first NAIA Division I national championship, and he coached six first team all-American players.
In 1969, Bullington became the school's athletic director and presided over the Wildcats transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. While Bullington was the athletic director, the Wildcats won 17 national titles, including another football championship in 1977, and 41 Lone Star Conference championships.
The former Wildcat was inducted to the ACU Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 for his service to the university and its athletic program and was elected to the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor in 1999. Bullington and his wife, Valrie ('53), have three children: Brenda Dickson ('79), Laurie Muns ('80) and Brad Bullington ('90).
