Troy Caraway
Troy Caraway

Troy Caraway, associate professor of art, was a recognized authority on art education in the public school classroom and served as the coordinator of art for six years in the Abilene public schools before he joined the Abilene Christian faculty in 1959.

In 1965 he was recognized as Teacher of the Year and was most widely known for his philosophy that art exists in schools "…not to develop professional artists but to give children more opportunities to express themselves on their level of growth and to appreciate their creative expression and then that of others."

Caraway was on convention programs of the National Art Education Association, the Western Art Education Association and served as a consultant for the American Crayon Company.  He was a Texas chairman for "National American Art Week," a secretary of the Texas Art Association, chairman of the Policy-Making Committee for the TAA and a member of the National Representative Assembly of National Art Association.

Caraway taught at ACU until his sudden death in 1971.
