Dr. Rex Kyker received his bachelor's degree in speech, drama, and Bible from ACU in 1943.

Kyker was a member of the ACU faculty for 37 years.  He began as an instructor in 1944 and was promoted to associate professor in 1949.  He served as director of Summer School and as a residence hall director.  From 1954 until early 1957 he was the director of the Graduate School. 

In February of 1957 he was appointed head of the Department of Communication, a position that he filled for more than 20 years.  He also coached debate teams, which several times received invitations to the national Debate Tournament at West Point.  He w as "The Voice of the Big Purple" during band performances at half-time shows and in the traditional Opening Chapel services.

Dr. Kyker was honored as ACU's Teacher of the Year by the Board of Trustees in 1975.  He and his wife, Chris White ('46), were recognized for their dedicated service to Abilene Christian University by the establishment of the Rex and Chris Kyker Scholarship for the Performing Arts.

In 2000, ACU honored Kyker with a Distinguished Alumni Citation, which was accepted by his wife, children and grandchildren.  Kyker died December 12, 1996.  The Kykers had five children, all graduates of ACU.  They are: Dr. Jeri Pfeifer ('70), Rob ('72), Lindy Fullerton ('74), Jan Bryan ('75) and Ricky ('81).
