Retta Scott Garrett

Retta Scott Garrett taught English at ACU from 1935-1958 and served as dean of women from 1940-42.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, speech and Spanish from Harding University in 1928 and a Master of Arts degree from Texas State College for Women in English literature and English language in 1933. She also attended the University of Georgia in 1941.

Before coming to ACU, Garrett served as the head of Modern Language at Tarleton State University in 1925. She then taught at Harding University from 1928 to 1932. After leaving ACU, she was director of the English department at Oklahoma Christian.

In addition to her role as dean of women, Garrett served as sponsor of the Prickly Pear and the Pickwickian Club for creative writers.

A creative writing contest was established in her honor in 1965 named the Retta Scott Garrett award contest. She was the author of two poetry books, “My Children” and “Dream Smoke” and was also included in Who’s Who of American Poets.

Garrett also actively participated in the national English fraternity Sigma Tau Delta, the Mark Twain Society, South Central Modern Languages Association, Poetry Society of Texas and the National Council of Teachers of English and served as president of the writer’s division of American Association of University Women.
