Private Christian universities were among the hardest hit during the Great Depression. At a time when ACU was barely surviving, it was revived by the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Hardin. Their love for God and Christian education led them to give a substantial amount of their oil fortune to ACU, along with many other private institutions such as Hardin-Simmons University, Hardin Junior College and Mary Hardin Baylor University. ACU's Hardin Administration Building is named in their honor.
