Dr. LeMoine Lewis was born February 9, 1916, in Midlothian. He graduated from ACU in 1936 with a degree in Bible. He received his S.T.B. from Harvard Divinity School and P.h.D. in religion from Harvard University in 1944 and 1959, respectively. Lewis was married to Shirley Harrell on Aug. 30, 1945.
Lewis began preaching while he was a student at ACU. After his graduation he served as a minister for Churches of Christ in Marshall, Snyder, Hamlin, Roscoe, Ardmore, Okla. and Brookline, Mass.
He began teaching at ACU in 1949 and specialized in church history and freshman and sophomore Bible courses. He received several educational and service awards while at ACU, including Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1956 and 1977. Lewis served as the director of the university's Bible Teachers Workshop, was twice the president of the Faculty Senate, chairman of the Purpose Committee and sponsor of Alpha Chi National Honor Society. He retired in 1986 after 37 years of service to the university.
Lewis was a long time member of the University Church of Christ and served as educational director for Highland Church of Christ for 10 years. He was involved locally with the Rotary Club as well as the Abilene Boys' Ranch and the West Texas Girl Scout Council.
Lewis and Shirley had three children: LeMoine Lewis, Jr. ('71), Dr. Stephanie Harter ('75) and Dr. Claudia Randolph ('81).
Lewis passed away in August of 1987 and of his service to students, the university and the Abilene community it was said that he "…brought to the classroom and the pulpit a rare combination of scholarship and a love for preaching. He will be remembered by a long list of students and an admiring group of colleagues as a professor who breathed life into ancient church history and a prophetic voice into preaching."
