J.S. Arledge

James Shaffer Arledge was a pioneer in the building of Abilene Christian University.

He was named to the Board of Trustees on May 16, 1911, at the age of 39, and was elected president of the board on September 6, 1916, a post he held until poor health forced him to retire as president in 1933.  He continued to serve on the board until 1937.

In May 1955, Arledge was honored with the annual Trustees Award for his outstanding contribution to the welfare of the university.

Arledge married Mattie Thornton on June 17, 1896. They had seven children – Lilian ('21), Mary ('21), James ('21), John, George, Horace ('33) and Eleanor ('41).
