Jim "Sheriff" Burgess joined the ACU staff in 1934 as the campus groundskeeper. He built the first stone house on the ACU hill and was responsible for planting many of the trees still on campus today. Sheriff retired from ACU in 1960.
Burgess and his wife, Maggie, had two children. Burgess died in 1970.
