Herschel Avinger

Dr. Herschel Avinger served in various school administration positions across West Texas before 1967 when he and his wife, Juanita, joined the ACU faculty.

He served on the Academic Council, the Graduate Council as Director of Graduate Studies in Education and from 1980-81 was acting dean of the Department of Education. Because of his work, ACU's graduate programs in education have become widely respected, and he was instrumental in establishing and promoting a cooperative extension program with Texas Tech University that allows teachers to work toward their doctorate while attending classes at ACU.

Dr. Avinger was honored by his department in 1981 when he received the teacher of the year award, and in 1983 he received the ACU Trustees Award as teacher of the year. He retired in 1985.
