Garvin Beauchamp served ACU for more than 40 years in a variety of roles – coach of ACU's only undefeated football team, dean of students and vice president of student services.
Beauchamp earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in physical education from ACU in 1941 and later received his master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma.
As a student, Beauchamp served as president of the Students’ Association and was the first recipient of the Dean Adams Achievement Award in 1941. He was the skipper (president) of the Sub-T men’s social club and played collegiate football, basketball, baseball, and tennis. He was captain of the 1940 ACU football team and named an all-Texas Conference guard for two years and most valuable player by his teammates.
Beauchamp returned to ACU in 1946 to serve as the assistant football coach, and he moved into the head coaching position in 1950. That year, Beauchamp coached the football team to the only undefeated season in ACU history. His teams won four Texas Conference championships in six years. Beauchamp also served as president of the Lone Star Conference.
In 1956, Beauchamp was named the dean of students and was promoted to vice president of student services in 1969. Beauchamp continued his service to ACU until he retired in 1988.
Beauchamp married Judy Jones on May 28, 1941 and they had two children: Gary and Priscilla.
Active in many community organizations, Beauchamp served as a loaned executive for the United Way of Abilene, roundup chairman for the local Boy Scouts of America, president of the Abilene Kiwanis Club and mayor pro tem of the City of Abilene.
His work for ACU was honored when an amphitheater near the university’s Biblical Studies Building was named for him and Judy. Beauchamp was inducted into the ACU Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
