Clara Bishop
Clara Bishop

Clara Bishop came to Abilene Christian in 1921 as President Jesse P. Sewell's secretary and dormitory hostess.  In 1926 she became registrar and served faithfully in that office until her retirement in 1951.

A native of Tennessee, Bishop moved with her family to Paris, Texas, at the age of two. She remained there until she married William J. Bishop and became a missionary, living in Japan from 1902-1909 and 1911-1913.

Bishop and her husband had three children – Margaret ('24), Julia ('24) and Mary Arledge ('27) – while living in Tokyo.

At the time, Bishop saw several Abilene Christian presidents come and go – Batsell Barrett Baxter, James F. Cox, and Don H. Morris.  After her retirement, she left ACU in early 1952 to live with her daughter in Missouri.

Bishop's daughter, Mary, said that during the years following her retirement, her mother followed the growth and advance of ACU with great interest.  She died on July 25, 1970, in a nursing home in Springfield, Mo.
