Carl Spain

Carl Spain left his native Tennessee in 1936 to attend Abilene Christian as a transfer from David Lipscomb.  At ACU he served as editor of the Prickly Pear, was a member of the A Club, Pickwickians and the Melpomenean Players.

He graduated in 1938 and that fall married Mildred McClung.  They had two daughters, Carla Trammell ('62) and Claudette Rogers ('67).

In 1954, President Don Morris convinced Spain to join the faculty at ACU as an associated professor of Bible.  He was promoted to full professor in 1963.

Spain preached for the Graham Street congregation in Abilene for five years, then from 1959-67 for the Hillcrest congregation.  In all, he served as minister for 14 congregations in Texas, Arkansas and Alabama.

While at ACU he was a member of the Faculty Senate, Graduate Council, Student Life Committee and various Bible department committees.  He also sponsored ACU's chapter of Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and was a sponsor of Galaxy men’s social club.

Spain died Dec. 21, 1990.
