Burnya Mae Moore

Burnya Mae Moore began teaching home economics at ACU in 1928 and was an active and involved member of the faculty for 47 years.  While at the university she taught all areas of home economics including clothing textiles, design arts, foods and meal planning, first aid and home nursing.

She received her bachelor's degree from Texas Woman's University in 1928 and her master's degree in clothing in Textiles from TWU in 1938.  Moore was an associate professor of home economics and also became the teacher with the longest tenure on the ACU faculty.

In 1974 she was honored as the Woman of the Year at ACU by the Women for ACU and served as the committee chairman for the 541-page cookbook produced by the WACU.  After retiring she was named professor emeritus of home economics.  During her time as a professor Moore prompted refurbishing to the home economics department and also mad personal contributions for new equipment and supplies.  She sponsored a style show to help purchase the first electric sewing machines for the department.

Moore was active in the American Red Cross, the Business and Professional Women's Club and the American Association of University Women.  She was well-known throughout her profession as an expert in the field.  Dr. Allena Pace, past president of the Texas Home Economics Association said of Moore, "Burnya Mae Moore knowsn more about tailoring than anyone in Texas."

Moore died August 29, 1989.
