Batsell Baxter had taught at Abilene Christian since 1919, and he was appointed to the presidency in 1924 at Sewell's recommendation.
Baxter initiated more relaxed restrictions on the social privileges of students, and student activities and organizations increased in importance.
Renowned for his sense of humor, Baxter loved to tell jokes and was equally willing to laugh when the joke was on him.
A few years after he took office it became increasingly apparent that the school would soon outgrow its campus. A new site was selected in 1927 on the northeast edge of the city.
The fall semester of 1929 began on the new campus with an enrollment of 517. But as the Depression began to take its toll, enrollment began to slip and debts mounted.
On Dec. 10, 1931 Baxter's resignation was announced. He had accepted the presidency of his beloved alma mater David Lipscomb College.
