Memories from the 1940s

Something funny that happened at ACU was ...

1948 - As a freshman in 1948, I had never been tardy or absent from my English class taught by Mima Williams.  One day I was with a friend at Ivo's (a drug store across the street), and while playing the pinball machine, won 10 free games.  I saw that it was time for my English class, but elected to stay and play the free games.

At the next English class meeting, Miss Williams asked if I had been sick enough to miss the previous class.  I said, "No, I had won free games on the pinball machine at Ivo's and just stayed there during the class time."

Miss Williams looked at me for a moment, and then said, "I know you were sick, and I am not counting you absent."
