On February 24, 1927, during its annual board meeting, the Abilene Christian College Board of Trustees approved a motion to place the current campus for sale, setting in motion the process that would result in the "great move."
The campus on North 1st Street had been the only home of Abilene Christian, originally Childers Classical Institute, since its founding in 1906. Even though the campus was very crowded, the school was in the middle of a campaign to raise $150,000 to build a new administration building.
A City Set on a Hill draws from the many archive collections at ACU including Board of Trustees minutes, back issues of The Optimist and Prickly Pear, and various photographs and architectural drawings.
Comprised of five major sections, this exhibition covers the time from the decision to sell the current campus through the opening celebration for the new campus and into the campus' first decade. The largest section, The New Campus and Buildings, looks at the new campus and each of the original buildings.
