In Conclusion

The following unsigned editorial from the September 26, 1929 issue of The Optimist is a fitting conclusion to the exhibition, A City Set on a Hill.

When Dreams Come True

During childhood days boys and girls have some wonderful dreams.  Their imagination is great, and they build castles in the air.  From blush of morn till evening star, they dwell in the land of reverie.  Some of their dreams come true, but many of them are crushed by the grim realities of life.

Several years ago pioneers of Christian education in Texas dreamed of an institution that would be a blessing to God and man, and a credit to the community in which it was located.  Their dream was not an idle fancy built upon visionary ideas.  It was prompted by a sincere love for humanity and founded upon business principles.

Arising from those dreams with a stern determination to put Christian education within reach of all, the pioneers began to work.  They loved and labored and sacrificed until their bodies bent beneath the load.  Others came on and worked unceasingly to attain the coveted goal.  At times, the movement seemed doomed to failure.  Financial reverses caused dark clouds to hover about those who were giving themselves to the work.  Despite all obstacles, they braved the storm until their dreams came true.

Today we see a realization of that dream.  Abilene Christian College stands as a monument to those who dedicated themselves to the work.  Gilded with the last rays of a West Texas sunset, her seven buildings roll up to meet the sky.  We doff our hats as we approach her portals, and bow our heads out of respect for those who made the dream come true.
