1970

Over the course of the decade from 1970-80 enrollment increased by nearly 42 percent. The number of students enrolled in 1970 was 3,217.

 

1973

During his final address to chapel on September 27 Don Morris said, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is no ordinary college that you and I have the privilege of being a part of."

During the 1970s Garvin Beauchamp devised his famous (or infamous) Beauchamp Bumps, the exceptionally high and angular speed bumps across campus, which do effectively prevent speeding. For years, the student buzz across campus during the spring semester was that the senior gift each year would be to shave down the speed bumps to a more standard size. It has never happened.

 

1974

Sherrod Residential Park opened.

 

1975

The A. B. Morris Dormitory opened.

 

1976

ACC officially became ACU at 3:01 p.m. on February 22 by vote of the Board of Trustees. A committee chaired by trustee Jack Pope, chief justice of the Supreme Court of Texas, recommended the change. Trustees, under the leadership of Ray McGlothlin, Jr., unanimously approved the new name.

 

1977

The W. C. and Vera Sikes Dormitory opened.

 

1978

The Smith-Adams Dormitory opened.
