Musical Comedy: Abilene 1906 – This hilarious show, created by the team of Dr. Jack Boyd ('55) and Dr. Ed George ('61), tells the story of Abilene at the time ACU was a dream about to become a reality in Childers Classical Institute. As Abilene celebrates its 125th birthday this year, watchers will see how the two entities have been community partners since the beginning.

Centennial Birthday Celebration and Open House – The entire community is invited to the bash celebrating ACU’s 100th birthday. Music, food and fun festivities will mark the special occasion. ACU will host an open house on campus from 1 to 4 p.m., followed by birthday cake and a carnival in the evening, and a concert and fireworks that night. Families and visitors can take the Walking Tour, see historic films in the Centennial Theatre, get autographs from favorite university icons, and see Jack Maxwell's amazing new sculpture, "Jacob's Dream." This is the grand finale for a year-long Centennial Celebration!

Centennial Art Exhibition Opening Reception - The Centennial Art Exhibition will celebrate four generations – a century – of visual arts creativity in the ACU family. Centennial Speaker Series: Dr. Kenneth Elzinga – A professor of economics at the University of Virginia, Elzinga’s introductory economics course attracts more than 1,000 students each fall and is the largest class offered at UVa. His smaller Antitrust Policy seminar often has a waiting list of two years. The author of more than 70 academic publications, he also is known for three mystery novels (co-authored with William Breit) where the protagonist employs economic analysis to solve the crime.

Freshman Follies 2005: The Mission – Let this year’s freshman class give you a look at the past through the eyes of the future. You’ll see everything from lip-synching to gymnastics to comedy routines during this hilarious variety show, produced annually by Student Productions. ACU’s 100th class of freshman will tell the story of a group of freshman who stumble upon a code buried in ACU’s mission statement. They set out on a journey all over the campus. In between clips of their journey, each act will reflect on ACU life in past decades.

Christian Higher Education: Heritage and Promise – This seminar on the integration of faith and learning features Dr. Duane Litfin, president of Wheaton College in Illinois. His two doctorates are from Purdue University and Oxford University, and he is the author of several books and articles in journals and periodicals.

Faculty Artist Series: Dr. Marion Cawood – Soprano Dr. Marion Cawood sang opera and operetta for four years in Munich as a Fulbright Scholar and at the Cologne Opera House, Germany. She has performed at Carnegie Recital Hall and at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; as a soloist with the Dallas Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Lexington Symphony, San Angelo Symphony and Kingsport Symphony; and as a soloist in the Nashville Opera Company and Abilene Opera Association.

Faculty Artist Series: Marcia Straughn and Ron Rathbun –Straughn, instructor of flute at Hardin-Simmons and ACU, and Rathbun, professor emeritus of piano at ACU, will perform a flute and piano recital. Straughn is a past winner of the Texas Flute Society Festival Competition and the Abilene Collegiate Concerto Competition. She took second prize in the 2003 Flute Society of Kentucky Young Artist Competition and has been a semifinalist in both the Flute Talk and Myrna W. Brown Artist Competitions. Rathbun’s credits include performances at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center, in Taegu, Korea, with both the Taegu Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gyungbuk Symphony Orchestra, and solo piano recitals in Bangkok; Penang and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; and Kunming, China.

Centennial Speaker Series: Pat Summerall – The pre-eminent network NFL voice for a generation of television viewers, Summerall also has overcome a major struggle with alcohol and a liver transplant. Following his career as a placekicker for the New York Giants, Summerall turned to broadcasting for the CBS network, initially as a color commentator and then as a play-by-play announcer. While at CBS, Summerall broadcast golf and tennis tournaments in addition to his NFL work. For many years Summerall was paired on NFL telecasts with former Oakland Raiders coach John Madden, first on CBS and then on the Fox Network.

Sacred Relationships Speaker Series: Drs. Dennis Lowe and Emily Scott-Lowe – Drs. Dennis Lowe and Emily Scott-Lowe, both of Pepperdine University, are nationally known marriage and relationship specialists. They have conducted seminars on marriage, parenting and relationships throughout the United States and internationally. Dennis is a licensed marriage and family therapist, a licensed psychologist, director of the Center for the Family, and a professor of psychology at Pepperdine. Emily is a licensed clinical social worker with more 20 years experience and a certified family life educator (CFLE). In addition, she is an instructor of human development and relationships and an assistant visiting professor of social work at Pepperdine.

Faculty Artist Series: Eric Wilson, saxophone – Wilson ('88) is director of bands and associate professor of conducting and saxophone at ACU. He has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, San Antonio Symphony, and as a featured soloist with the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, University of Michigan Chamber Orchestra, Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, San Angelo Symphony, Abilene Collegiate Orchestra, and numerous wind esembles. Wilson has been a featured performer in national and regional conventions of the Texas Music Educators Assocation and North American Saxophone Alliance.

Conference on Theology in the Christian University: “Prospects for the 21st Century” – This conference, sponsored by the Graduate School of Theology, will rethink the nature of theological education within the Christian university and will stand out not only for its subject matter, but also for its relevance to the contemporary discussion. Faculty Artist Series: Samuel Cook, tenor – Cook, artist in residence and assistant professor of voice at ACU, will perform a vocal recital. Cook attended the Peabody Conservatory of Music and later continued his vocal training with the world famous tenor, Carlo Bergonzi in Busetto, Italy. He has appeared as an operatic artist with companies in South Africa, Spain, Chicago, Austria and Germany.

Centennial Speaker Series: Robin Roberts – Co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning, America,” Robin Roberts is one of the most versatile broadcast journalists and commentators in television. A professed “woman of faith,” Roberts has garnered several awards for excellence and for contributions to the image of working women on television, along with helping expand career options for women in broadcast journalism.

Centennial Graduation Celebration – This time of celebration for graduates, faculty and administrators will include live music, academic regalia, brief speeches by deans of each college and a grand finale to pay tribute to students’ academic experience at ACU.

May Centennial Commencement – The ceremony includes a devotional, an inspirational speaker and the opportunity to congratulate graduates as they are recognized individually.

Abilene Shakespeare Festival - Playing in rolling repertory, the Abilene Shakespeare Festival produces two exciting productions on alternate nights. The festival is free thanks to grants provided by the Ann B. Stokes Foundation, Abilene Cultural Affairs Council, and the Texas Commission on the Arts. The annual festival provides and excellent opportunity to expose West Texas to the major works of Shakespeare and other classical literature.
