The Communication Sciences and Disorders Department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in communication sciences and disorders.
Four years of undergraduate education in the basic sciences, followed by at least two additional years of clinical study are required to practice as a Certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Graduates of professional programs must also complete a Clinical Fellowship and pass a national examination before earning certification. Speech-language pathologists are required by most states to earn a master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The graduate program in speech-language pathology at ACU is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation from ASHA.
Introduction
A communication disorder is anything that interferes with speech, language, or hearing. People with communication disorders comprise the largest population of Americans with disabilities. One in 10 Americans has some kind of communication disorder. To meet the needs of these people, speech-language pathologists use behavioral, cognitive, physiological, and technological procedures to assess and treat speech, language and swallowing disorders. Their work involves treating numerous communication and swallowing disorders including children with developmental delays, people who stutter, stroke survivors, and individuals who have progressive neurological diseases. Speech-language pathologists also provide instruction to others, such as actors and singers, in the preservation of their voices. Speech-language pathologists work in a variety of settings and collaborate with other professionals such as classroom teachers, physicians, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.
Study Abroad Expectations
All students are encouraged to participate in ACU’s Study Abroad program. Classes offered at Study Abroad sites vary depending on the site. Academic advisors can assist students in planning ahead for their Study Abroad experience and should be consulted during the freshman year.
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to the program in communication sciences and disorders, a student must satisfy the requirements listed in the ACT/SAT Placement Information section of this catalog.
