Passport Testing

On behalf of the University Testing Center, welcome to ACU!

Listed below are some brief descriptions of each test offered during Passport sessions, as well as additional testing requirements for specific majors. Please read the descriptions and determine which tests you need or would like to take.

After deciding which tests you plan to take, please fill out a June Passport Testing form or an August Passport Testing form.

Due to limited space, multiple testing times have been offered to accommodate all students and provide a better testing environment. Reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tests Offered During Passport

CLEP Examinations ($80 to CLEP paid online prior to test date, $25 to ACU)*:

Students desiring to test out of college courses are given the opportunity to take CLEP examinations. Usually you should only attempt credit by examination for courses in which you earned a grade of “A” while in high school. Scores are available shortly after the test is finished. The list of CLEP tests ACU accepts is on the Passport Testing Reservation Form.

University English and Math Placement Tests ($10):

Students whose ACT/SAT scores require them to enroll in a developmental course have the option to take these tests to improve their course placement. Placement tests are untimed, but generally take 45-60 minutes to complete. Scores are available upon completion of the test.

Advanced Math Placement Tests ($10):

This test is required for students majoring in Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Biochemistry, Pre-Architecture, and most Pre-Health Professions. This test is a prerequisite for Precalculus II (MATH 124), Calculus for Applications (MATH 131), and Calculus I (MATH 185). These students will be notified of this requirement and asked to contact the University Testing Center to schedule a test time. This test is untimed, but generally takes 45-60 minutes to complete. Scores are available upon completion of the test.

ACU English Essay ($25)*:

Students meeting eligibility requirements may opt to take this essay to earn credit in Freshman English (ENGL 111 or ENGL 111 and 112). The amount of credit earned is dependent on the method of eligibility.  This test is only available at the Passport sessions, and scores are not immediately available. Students will, however, be informed of their results in time to make schedule changes.

A student can qualify to write the ACU English Essay by one of the following methods:

  1. Scoring 29-31 on the ACT English subtest or 710-740 on the SAT Critical Reading subtest.
  2. Scoring 3 on either the AP English Language or AP English Literature exam.
  3. Scoring at least a 55 on the College Composition Modular CLEP test. Most students who pass the ACU English Essay examination will receive 3 hours credit for ENGL 111. However, students who score a 3 on the AP English Literature and Composition Test or a 64 on the College Composition Modular CLEP test and then earn a superior score on the ACU English Essay will receive 6 hours credit for ENGL 111 and ENGL 112.

*Students who earn course credit from CLEP exams or the ACU English Essay will be charged an additional fee of $50 per course to post that credit to their transcript.
