COMPASS Placement for Math and English
New students, including transfers with fewer than 65 transferable degree credits, have the option to complete placement testing and enroll in the courses indicated by this testing. Placement testing is offered in the areas of English and Mathematics.
Students whose ACT/SAT scores require them to enroll in a developmental course have the option to take these tests in order to improve their course placement. Placement tests are untimed, but generally take 45-60 minutes to complete. Scores are available upon completion of the test.
A $10 fee is charged for each placement test given. These tests can be taken a maximum of two times prior to the beginning of the student's first semester.
Students who have completed transferable college credit in an area where their SAT/ACT test scores indicate placement testing are not required to take the placement test but are encouraged to do so for advising purposes.
The Advanced Math Placement Test is required for students majoring in Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Biochemistry, Pre-Architecture, and most Pre-Health Professions. This test is a prerequisite for Pre-Calculus II (MATH 124) and Calculus I (MATH 185).
WebCAPE Placement for Foreign Language
Students who wish to enroll in a college-level modern foreign language (Spanish, French, German, Russian, and Chinese) course at ACU are strongly encouraged to take a WebCAPE placement test. The WebCAPE (Computer Adaptive Placement Exam) is designed for students who have taken foreign language in high school or who have “picked it up” either from living abroad (e.g., missionary or military kids) or through family heritage. Taking this exam will allow for more accurate course placement based on the student's ability and could allow a student to skip introductory foreign language classes to enroll in more advanced courses.
Please note: No credit is granted with WebCAPE exams. To earn course credit, a student must take and pass the CLEP exam. This placement exam is not designed for native speakers nor does it grant credit. Native speakers wishing to take advanced courses in their language should consult with the Foreign language department for placement.
The WebCAPE is taken online at a cost of $10 due at the time of registration. The exam is not timed, but it generally takes 20 - 30 minutes to complete. Scores and suggested placements are available upon completion of the test. The student should print the last page and have it available for his/her academic advisor who can then enroll the student in the suggested course.
