Though
students are our primary focus, the environment ACU provides for living and
learning continues to be a big part of their experience here. Thanks to many generous donors, construction
projects continue to change the face of campus and provide spaces for study,
work, and play.
Sikes Hall received an almost- unbelievable facelift over the summer (if you lived there, you will hardly believe it’s the same place!). In the spring, foundation work was followed by a complete interior and exterior overhaul. The new brick facade and windows mimic the look of the new A.B. Barret Hall. New community spaces and a patio have been added to encourage group learning experiences and fellowship.
McGlothlin Campus Center has enjoyed quite a transformation as well. The information desk, ticket windows, and Hilton Room have been removed to expand the food court area, named for Dr. L. D. “Bill” and Alvah Jean Hilton. The open atmosphere, new tile floors, and additional food choices are already popular with the students.
Some of our most historical buildings, Hardin Administration Building, McDonald Hall, and Nelson Hall, are in the midst of an interesting restorative process. These buildings have beautiful decorative cornice work (much like crown molding) around the top perimeter which had begun to deteriorate. Craftsmen have spent the summer removing the old, crumbling cornice and replacing it with a clean, solid replica that looks great.
Athletics areas have also enjoyed a facilities boost this summer. A 60-yard stretch of artificial turf was laid on the football practice field next to Teague Special Events Center. This will allow our football players to practice on an all-weather surface that is the same as that which they will encounter at Shotwell Stadium. The south tennis courts are being replaced and additional viewing areas added. The Powell Fitness Center enjoyed a 3,400 sq. ft. addition, providing greatly expanded weight and workout areas for our student athletes, and better access for all our students.
Construction is well underway on the Duncum Center for Conflict Resolution, located at the corner of East North 16th Street and North Judge Ely Blvd. View construction photos online.
Add to all this numerous remodeling and refurbishing projects all over campus, plus a rainy year that has left the grounds green and lush, and you’ll find that ACU’s environment is more beautiful than ever. Every year, gifts to ACU’s Annual Fund, along with gifts designated to particular projects, help keep our campus safe, functional, and beautiful for current students and for our guests. Come and visit campus soon!
