What is Chapel All About?

Chapel has taken many different forms throughout ACU's history. In 1947, the campus gathered in Sewell Auditorium, sitting in church pews for a time of traditional worship. In 1967, Chapel moved from the traditional setting into Moody Coliseum – a basketball arena seating more than 6,000 people.

Even today, the face of Chapel looks different than in previous generations. However, while the face of Chapel may change, the heart and purpose remain the same.

Throughout each week, you can choose from a diverse selection of gathering times and opportunities. These opportunities include gatherings of the whole campus for reading of scripture and worship, campus conversations, small groups gatherings and evening forums.

Mondays

Students, staff and faculty return from the weekend to "ACU Connects" - a time when we're all together in Moody Coliseum to celebrate victories, learn about the campus activities of the week and pray for each other. A student praise team leads us in praise and worship, and a speaker from on-campus, from the Abilene community or from other places around the country brings a brief message from Scripture.

Tuesdays

Students have the choice of attending Chapel in Moody or attending one of the

"Campus Conversations," which are smaller groups of students and faculty talking about issues like money and finances, connecting with contemporary culture, and what it is we believe. These are honest conversations with honorable people.

Wednesdays

Sometimes we have "Departmental Chapel" - worshipping with our faculty and other majors, or "Class Chapel" - praising God with friends our age, or we meet in Moody Coliseum for "Come to the Quiet" - a time to be silent before the Lord, to light a candle and pray for ourselves and others, or to just find quiet refuge from a hurried world

Thursdays

Students can choose to join Small Groups - groups located all across campus with similar interests, like service, leadership, mission or friendship, "Come As You Are" - a time of praise and worship in Chapel on the Hill, or to put their "Faith in Action" by serving meals through Meals on Wheels, serving as a lunch buddy with an elementary student or serving in some other kind of outreach.

Fridays

ACU closes out the week back in Moody Coliseum with "Praise and Worship" - a special time when we honor Jesus with our week and give him the expectations of our weekend.  It's a powerful time of giving our all to the Lord.

Another Chapel Option

Another choice you have for fulfilling your Chapel credits is to attend Chapel Forums - an hour-long evening gathering of students, staff and faculty for an opportunity to hear a powerful message from national and international speakers.
