Dr. John C. Stevens
Dr. John C. Stevens served Abilene Christian University for 12 years as President and for nine years as Chancellor. Dr. Stevens died in 2007. Born July 15, 1918, Stevens grew up in Richland, Texas. He was a long time preacher who served as a U.S. Army chaplain during World War II. Stevens was a student leader at ACU, graduating with a B.A. degree in Bible in 1938. He earned a master's degree in history and political science from the University of Arkansas in 1948 and later his Ph.D in history and political science. He began teaching at ACU in 1948. Stevens was inaugurated as ACU's eighth President in 1969. He was active in his church and in community work, serving as a church elder, an Abilene City Councilman, and a board member for numerous organizations. He also received honorary doctorates from four universities.
