2012 Alumni Awards
2012 Outsdatnding Alumnus of the year: Mike Calvert ('67)
Outstanding Alumnus of the Year
The ACU Alumni Advisory Board is pleased to name Mike Calvert (’67) the university’s 2012 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.
Calvert, a 1967 ACU alumnus, owns Houston’s Mike Calvert Toyota, one of the largest Toyota dealerships in the southern United States. Calvert began working for a Houston Chevrolet dealership in 1969, getting a taste of each department until becoming general manager in 1974.
In 1978, his dealership bought a small Toyota dealership, and Calvert assumed management of that entity, as well, eventually buying it outright in 1983.
In the 28 years since, Calvert has grown his dealership from a small store into the major dealership on a 13-acre lot, which he purchased and developed in 1997. In 2008, Calvert expanded his business to the San Antonio area, buying a Toyota franchise in Boerne.
Calvert is an eight-time recipient of Toyota’s highest award, the Toyota President’s Award, but what really sets him apart is the work he has done outside the United States.
Since taking a missions trip to Haiti in 2004, Calvert has devoted increasing resources to caring for Haitian orphans, making four to five annual trips to the country, working with Hope for Haiti’s Children. In 2010, he and three others partnered with Mission Lazarus to begin providing long-term, high-quality orphan care and education to the poorest neighborhoods of Haiti’s capital, Port au Prince.
Calvert also co-founded Health Empowering Humanity, which focuses on improving the quality of life in developing nations by providing access to quality basic medical care. HEH’s most recent project was providing vital-sign-monitoring equipment to Kamuzu Central Hospital in the small South African nation of Malawi, thus helping reduce the country’s childhood-mortality rate.
2012 Young Alumnus of the Year:
Sean Adams ('93)
Young Alumnus of the Year
The Alumni Advisory Board is pleased to name Sean Adams ('93) the 2012 Young Alumnus of the Year.
Adams, a former NCAA All-American athlete at ACU, has used sports to reach and minister to others as a popular author, top-rated radio host and in-demand motivational speaker.
As a sportswriter, Adams has covered college sports for 11 years, the last seven of which he spent focusing on the Texas Longhorns and the Big 12 Conference for orangebloods.com. As a television and radio personality, Sean has appeared on Fox, ABC, CBS and the NFL Network, among other media outlets, and his daily talk show, "The Adams Theory," is a top-rated show on Austin's No. 1 sports-radio station, ESPN Austin, 104.9-FM.
Adams also travels the country, speaking to athletes, parents and corporate clients about the fundamental principles of sports and teamwork. Adams encourages audiences of all ages to "find themselves and be who they potentially are," using sports and humor to communicate that message. As a result of that work, Adams has written two books – "Sports for Life: Daily Sports Themes for Life Success," published in 2006, and "It's Okay to Be Crazy," published in 2010.
