Preparing for College

It is never too early to think about your child's college experience! Below are some things to remember as that day approaches.

Elementary School - Middle School

  • Start Saving for College. Check out 529 plans or other savings vehicles.
  • Developing good study habits is important. Encourage and challenge your child academically.
  • Don't forget to allow them to dream. Do they want to be a Fireman or President of the United States? A world-class musician or the center fielder for the Texas Rangers?
  • Watch to see what strengths they develop and nurture those.

Freshman year

  • Make sure your student is on a recommended or advanced track to begin High School. Ensure they will be challenged by Honors or AP classes. This will pay off when they reach college.
  • If your child has been wanting to try something new, now is the time. Do they want to play the guitar or write for the school paper? How about go out for the football team or the school play? Don't allow them to limit themselves.
  • Research costs, scholarships and financial aid to help pay for your child's education.
  • Make college a normal part of conversation. Don't be afraid of the topic. Get your son or daughter on the mailing list of two to three schools.

Sophomore year

  • Register for the PSAT or PLAN if they are offered to Sophomores at their school.
  • If your child wants to play sports in college, now is a great time to look at NCAA requirements. Find out which schools offer varsity level sports in your son/daughter's specific sport.
  • Talk with your child about what to look for in a college. Get some ideas here.
  • Spend time together researching colleges that your child is interested in. Can you narrow the list? Public or Private? Small or Large? In-State or Out-of-State?
  • Go over their school schedule and make sure they are taking the right types of classes to round out their transcript. Make sure they are challenged!

Junior year

  • Register for College Entrance Exams (Most students take their ACT or SAT during their Junior year)
  • Watch for when your child can begin taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams for college credit.
  • Start applying for College. Many schools will offer an application fee discount for early applicants.
  • Watch for early admit deadlines and the perks that go with them.
  • Visit college campuses, take tours, talk with counselors and professors at all of the schools your child is interested in.
  • Learn the in's and out's of the college Financial Aid Process.
