Real-World Experience

  • Professors work closely with undergraduate students, offering the opportunity to assist in research projects and presentations.
  • Major instrumentation within the department includes an FT-nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, gas and liquid chromatographs, GC-mass spectrometer, UV-Vis, FT-IR, and fluorescence and atomic absorption spectrometers.
  • Students participate in summer research programs at various universities including Texas Tech University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Virginia, University of Kansas and Oklahoma State University, among others.

Exceptional Degrees

  • Chemistry and biochemistry degrees can lead to careers in research, development and management with chemical industries, healthcare professions, pharmacy, teaching, and patent or corporate law.
  •  Eighty percent of graduates who apply to medical or dental school are accepted, which is twice the national average. 50 percent of all chem/biochemistry grads go on to obtain an advanced degree.
  • A cooperative Bachelor of Science in chemistry degree is available with three years of work at ACU, plus one year at a recognized professional school, allowing students to start medical or dental school more quickly.
  • Distinguished alumni include Dr. Carlton Ash, research scientist for Shell Development Company; Dr. Claudia Lewis Randolph, associate senior scientist for Kaman Sciences; Dr. Clayton Heathcock, dean, College of Chemistry, University of California-Berkley; and many more.

Faculty who Make the Difference
