Biblical Text

Christian Ministry

Communication prepares students for a variety of careers where people and information come together. It also provides preparatory training for law school, public relations, human resources, sales, management, government work and many other fields which require competence in information management and human interaction.

Communication Sciences and Disorders ensures that each student is adequately prepared to pursue pre-professional and professional endeavors in speech-language pathology. Faculty members participate with students in a variety of community services that relate to prevention, awareness and management of communication disorders.

Mathematics and Computer Science

Education - prepares educators who will have the professional knowledge and skills to work in a wide range of roles in elementary and secondary schools both public and private. The teacher education program is accredited by the Texas State Board for Educator Certification. Abilene Christian University is a member of the Texas Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education.

General Business (Minor only consult BAS advisor for details) This is a minor designed to help students develop skills needed in the business world. ACU's College of Business Administration also prepares students for marketplace careers by integrating faith and Christian principles of conduct with business skills.

Gerontology - prepares students to work and minister in the growing field of gerontology (the study of the issues related to aging). Students learn the bio-psycho-social processes of aging and how those affect family, community, church and other aspects of social life. Most graduates continue on in a Masters program and work in the area of Christian ministry or long-term care administration.

Human and Professional Administration - an interdisciplinary program that draws from such disciplines as Human Communication, Sociology and Management to expose students to theories of leadership and group dynamics and marketplace applications of those theories. Students go on to work in a variety of fields such as human resources, administration and research.

Liberal Arts - provides students an opportunity to study a variety of disciplines. Twelve hours in each of three disciplines allows the student to customize his/her degree to better prepare for the career desired. This plan also provides maximum use of previous college work.

Nursing (RN to BAS) Students who go through the ACU nursing degree learn the art, science and spirit of the profession of nursing. The Patty Hanks Shelton School of Nursing is unique in the fact that it is the only school of nursing that functions as a consortium of three major Christian universities, Abilene Christian University , Hardin-Simmons University and McMurry University .

Physical Education/Non-Teaching

Psychology - provides students with the opportunity to study fundamental principles of human development, learning, personality and physiological psychology. Students also learn concepts and skills in the application of psychology to industrial, clinical, counseling and other work settings.

Sociology - provides valuable skills for students planning careers in a wide variety of fields including social research, criminology, demography, social psychology, public administration, gerontology, education, rehabilitation, social work and market research. It also provides a strong foundation for those planning to enter law, business, medicine, community planning, architecture and politics.

Sociology/Criminal Justice - Abilene Christian University offers a Bachelor of Applied Studies degree in sociology with an emphasis in criminal justice. This degree is designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice system in the United States and the development and practical application of such concepts as deviant and criminal behavior, law, social control, civil liberties, and constitutionalism.
