Garner Roberts retired in May
2004 as assistant director of marketing and public relations at Abilene
Christian University. A 1970 graduate of ACU, he was editor and sports
editor of the student newspaper and twice won the award for outstanding
student journalist.
He previously served ACU as director of media relations, director of sports information and senior marketing advisor. He was director of media relations for the inauguration of ACU president Dr. John C. Stevens and the opening of Brown Library, Moody Coliseum, Gibson Health and P.E. Center, and McGlothlin Campus Center.
During his 25 years in sports information he won several "best in the nation" awards from College Sports Information Directors of America for media guides and feature writing and was elected to the CoSIDA Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was named to the ACU Sports Hall of Fame.
Roberts also served as publications editor for Hallmark Cards, Inc., in Kansas City. He was assistant press chief for track and field and opening and closing ceremonies at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984, and he has been press officer for U.S. track and field teams at IAAF World Championships in Japan and Sweden and other competition in Mexico, Canada, Cuba, England and Germany.
He and his wife Linda, also a former ACU student, have three sons and three grandchildren. Roberts is a member of the American Marketing Association, Track and Field Writers of America and the Board of Directors of the Texas Writers Project.
