Dr. Cheryl Bacon

Cheryl BaconOver her 25-year career at ACU, Dr. Cheryl M. Bacon has been a frequent contributor to ACU Today and part of its award-winning feature writing team. Today, she serves as chair of the journalism and mass communication department, having been a member of the JMC faculty since 1990 and previously from 1979-81.

She previously occupied several posts in public relations and development, serving in the early 1980s as ACU Today editor when it was still a quarterly newspaper. She was a regular columnist while alumni relations director from 1988-90. She remains active in the university's public relations area, writing for ACU Today and serving on the President's Council for the Centennial.

A Midland, Texas, native, Bacon grew up in Littleton, Colo. She received a B.A. (1976) from ACU, with majors in mass communication and political science. She earned her M.A. from ACU (1979), also in mass communication, and her Ed.D. from Texas Tech (1991) in administration. She earned her national accreditation in public relations in 1993 from the Public Relations Society of America.

As JMC chair, she oversees a program that includes eight full-time faculty and more than 270 students in three undergraduate majors, including two national award-winning student publications, The Optimist newspaper and Prickly Pear yearbook, as well as ACU videoworks, KXN-TV7, and NPR affiliate KACU-FM.

She has two children, Michael and Kate.
