2000 Summer WorkshopsThe 2000 lineup of annual Summer Workshops will offer practical "how to" information for Bible teachers, church leaders, women and church secretaries. The 46th annual Bible Teachers Workshop has been designed to equip teachers to go out and share God's good news in new and ingenious ways. "Much prayer and preparation has gone into the menu of classes and programs offered," said Dr. Carl Brecheen ('52), professor of Bible and ministry and co-director of the workshops. "The goal is to give participants a feeling of being refreshed and invigorated for the vital ministries in which they serve their church and community." Three days of classes will feature in-depth studies about issues such as how to get students to think for themselves, ministering to children about divorce and death, and creative use of household items and pets in teaching. The 19th annual Elders and Church Leaders Workshop will provide unique classes designed to foster growth among church leaders. Topics to be explored include mentoring, shepherding and the ministry of encouragement. The 10th annual Equipping Women for Ministry Workshop and the 9th annual Church Secretaries Workshop have merged this year to provide special classes and programs to equip women for Christian service in various capacities. Issues to be explored include peacemaking, meeting the special needs of widows, and how God can use you to spread His word. The registration fee for the 2000 Summer Workshops is $20, payable on arrival at any registration site on campus. No advance registration will take place, and that fee allows one person to attend any or all of the three workshops. Registration will start at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 23, in McGlothlin Campus Center. Housing is available in residence halls on campus. Reservations are necessary, though, and can be made by calling 915-674-3750 or visiting the Summer Workshops Web site at www.acu.edu/events/btw/ to request a housing reservation form. For more information, call Anna Heaps at 915-674-3750 or

Then she politely asked, "Is that really necessary?" Her unassuming response was genuine, and as she visited with the reporter, she graciously said it was nice just to be nominated. But when the Parents' Association presented Susan and Art Green ('82) in chapel Feb. 18 as Parents of the Year, son Matthew Blake, a senior from Abilene, said it was simply his way of showing how much he appreciated them. In an essay nominating his parents, Blake said: "Art, my father, has been a man of generosity for as long as I can remember. He has always given to those who are less fortunate and to those who need either time or money. "I am grateful for the example he has shown in the way he continually denies himself so others can have what they need. "As for my mother, Susan, I have never known a more godly woman Every day she blesses people with the words of wisdom that seem to continually flow from her mouth. "She is the strongest Christian I have ever known, and I have been blessed to be her child. I have grown up seeing her persevere through some of the toughest situations life has to offer, and yet every time she has come out tempered and strong. "As a middle school student, I can remember my sister bringing her college friends home for Sunday dinner. I was only an eighth grader at the time, but I remember anticipating the day when I would be a freshman at ACU and have the opportunity to bring my friends home for Sunday lunch." "It was the nicest thing," Susan said. "Not so much that we had been chosen, but in what our son had to say about us. Whether we got the honor or not, the fact he took the time to write what he did meant a lot to us." Art Green shared in his wife's surprise when they learned they were Parents of the Year, especially because Art Green is Blake's stepfather. Blake's father died in a construction accident in 1988. Art married Susan when Blake was 8 years old. "I just feel like they're the best parents anyone could
have, and they deserved the award," Blake said. |
