Barnes, Dilworth, Rodgers highlight summer
track action
Tracey Barnes' gold medal at the fourth Goodwill Games
July 22 in New York was the first for an ACU student-athlete
in a major international track and field meet since
1994.
Barnes, quartermiler from Westmoreland, Jamaica, ran 50.4
on Jamaica's winning 4x400 relay team, which upset the U.S.
with 3:24.76, fastest time in the world this year.
Barnes had lowered her school record in the 400 meters to
50.67 June 27 in Kingston for runner-up at the Jamaican
championships. That's the fastest time in the 400 by a U.S.
collegiate woman this season.
She was named Lone Star Conference Female Athlete of the
Year after winning NCAA Division II indoor and outdoor
titles in the 400 and leading ACU to its 15th straight LSC
team title.
The last gold medal for ACU came in 1994 when Mary
Tombiri ('96) ran on Nigeria's winning 4x100 relay at the
World Cup.
Other Wildcats competing this summer include long jumper
Kevin Dilworth of Tyler and decathlete Trafton Rodgers of
Akron, Ohio. Dilworth ('96) placed fifth at the Goodwill
Games July 20, and Rodgers ('97) won the sixth USA-Germany
decathlon dual meet Aug. 8-9 in Lubbock with a personal best
of 8,128 points. He won five of the 10 events after placing
second last year in Kreutzel, Germany.
Barnes and Dilworth were the fourth and fifth Wildcats to
compete at the Goodwill Games.
Earlier student-athletes representing ACU were Tim Bright
('83), Mark Witherspoon ('85) and Yolanda Henry ('87).
