Mark Foster ('10) | Study Abroad

Spotlight on Mark Foster, a Study Abroad alum.

Mark Foster never particularly enjoyed studying history, but his Study Abroad experience in Montevideo, Uruguay, changed all that.

"Learning South American history while seeing how it affects the current culture was a big surprise for me," says Mark, a recent graduate of ACU's School of Information Technology and Computing.

Students in his Latin American Studies class were sent around the city to various monuments and museums so they could experience historical sites firsthand. "It was kind of like a scavenger hunt to find them, and then take pictures and journal about each place," Mark says. "It surprised me how much I got into the history."

Mark also developed close relationships with other ACU students on the trip.  "Living in community for that amount of time, you really start to get to know each other," he says. "It helped me learn how to work and live in community."

Q&A with Mark

Describe a typical day in Montevideo.

Wake up and have breakfast before attending Spanish class with Amelia, our Spanish teacher. Then attend another class followed by an amazing lunch prepared by Raquel and Mariela. In the afternoon, some of us had class and some of our group would explore the city. At night we would do homework or explore the city or hang out with people from El Chana church.

What was your favorite part of the experience?

My favorite part was traveling around to different parts of Uruguay and South America. I enjoyed traveling in Argentina, Brazil and Peru. For spring break I went with several students to Lima and Machu Pichu, Peru.

What did you learn about yourself on the trip?

I learned to be more flexible. It was hard at first to live in a house with 22 students and two families of four. We all had to learn to be flexible and work through many issues.

What’s the funniest thing that happened to you?

Our Spanish teacher, Amelia, is a very energetic and fun teacher. She would really get everyone involved in class and want to get to know about each student personally. One day I got sick and didn't go to class, so Amelia came back to the house to see if I was OK. She told me I needed to wear a bufanda (scarf) and then I would feel better. She really made Spanish class fun and a great learning experience.
