Junior Scholars

Qualified high school students can get a head start on college credit by attending the Junior Scholars program, where participants take summer courses with current ACU students. Some school districts also allow the hours to concurrently satisfy high school requirements. Participation is limited to students between their junior and senior year.

To qualify, applicants must be well-motivated, mature and have a strong grade point average (mostly "As" in college prep track) in their high school courses.

The standard course load for each Summer term is 6 credit hours. Course choices are limited to freshman and sophomore level courses for which the student has prerequisites. All courses must be taken for credit.

Admission Requirements

The deadline for application to the Junior Scholars program is February 15, 2001. Your application for admission will automatically enter you in the scholarship competition as outlined under "Scholarships." The following five items should be mailed to Junior Scholars Admission, ACU Box 29000, Abilene, Texas 79699-9000.

  • Junior Scholars application
  • Non-refundable application fee
  • Permission/recommendation letter from his or her high school principal or counselor verifying that the student will complete their junior year before summer school begins
  • Transcript of high school grades through the fall semester showing any college entrance tests taken and confirming college prep work
  • Two-page personal essay &endash; introducing the student by describing his or her honors, activities, college plans, career plans and any special qualifications (including financial need)

Scholarships

Junior Scholars pay the same tuition rate as other ACU students. There are a limited number of scholarships available on a competitive basis. They are based in part on PSAT, ACT or SAT test scores, the application for admission and the personal essay.

Each scholarship can pay for up to 6 credit hours of tuition fees and housing for one summer session. Recipients who live in the residence hall will be expected to eat most of their meals on campus. Scholarships do not cover food, textbooks, special fees, incidental expenses, or tuition and fees beyond the 6 credit hours.

Applying for admission to the Junior Scholars program will automatically enter a student in the scholarship competition and must be done by February 15, 2001. Notification of decisions on scholarship awards will be made by March 15, 2001.

A scholarship is not in force until the awardee and his or her parents have signed and returned a scholarship acceptance form. The deadline for returning the acceptance form is April 5, 2001.
