Professor Werner Resel, Chairman
[VPO, Address]
RE: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra
Dear Professor Resel:
This letter is to urge you to overthrow the bonds of a 155-year-old tradition
which has excluded women and members of ethnic and racial minorities from
the orchestra. We feel that this exclusionary policy flies in the face of
everything that is right or fair in employment practices--especially of
musicians.
Orchestral music is an art of bringing together all families of instruments-
brass, woodwinds, strings, percussions - into a harmonious unity. The people
playing these instruments should not be judged on gender, race or ethnicity.
We feel that this outstanding orchestra tour of the United States would offer
a perfect opportunity for the Vienna Philharmonic to strike a blow for artistic
freedom and acceptance of all genders, races and ethnicities. Musical talent
knows no such bonds.
I appreciate your consideration of our views as well as the views of the
majority of our 9,700 members.
Sincerely,
Bill Peterson
