"Great Performances," the longest-running performing arts anthology on
television, will celebrate the New Year by broadcasting a concert by the
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The television audience for this concert
is estimated to be over a billion people all over the world, and I bet
that the nonwhere in the coverage of this concert will anyone mention
that the VPO still excludes women musicians from membership.

PBS is supported by "viewers like you." If you object to having an
orchestra that discriminates against women musicians celebrated and
showcased like this, write your local station and let them know your

"From Vienna: The New Year's Celebration" (1/1, 8:00 p.m. ET)
No holiday season is complete without the annual New Year's Day concert
from Vienna's majestic Musikverein hall. Hosted by Walter Cronkite, the
Vienna Philharmonic this year is led by guest conductor Riccardo Muti,
currently music director of Milan's La Scala Opera. The concert's
repertoire features a selection of beloved Strauss waltzes, including the
"Radetzky March" and "The Blue Danube.
