Word Order, Part 2
Verb Position
Probably the most important factor in writing (and speaking) good German is to get the conjugated verb in the right position in the sentence. If you are having trouble writing sentences correctly, my advice for you is to practice doing the following:
Making Statements (with a simple sentence, that is, with one subject/verb set)
- Reduce your sentence first to a subject and verb. I / to play
ich | spielen |
- Make sure they agree in number. I play (am playing)
ich | spiele |
- Put the verb in the right tense. We'll do this first example in the present tense.
- Add a time phrase. every day
ich | spiele | jeden Tag |
jeden Tag | spiele | ich |
- Add a place phrase. at the athletic field
jeden Tag | spiele | ich | auf dem Sportplatz |
- Add with whom. with my friends
jeden Tag | spiele | ich | mit meinen Freunden | auf dem Sportplatz |
- Notice that the conjugated verb stays in the second position. Time goes before place.
- Now add a modal, change the conjugated verb (spiele) back to the infinitive, and move it to the end of the sentence. have to/must
jeden Tag | muss | ich | mit meinen Freunden | auf dem Sportplatz | spielen |
- Now put the sentence without the modal into the past using the present perfect tense. A conjugated form of haben or sein takes the place of spielen. The conjugated form of spielen changes to the past participle; that is, spiele becomes habe gespielt.
jeden Tag | habe | ich | mit meinen Freunden | auf dem Sportplatz | gespielt |
- Now add a modal in the past tense. Remember that the modal shows the tense. Always use an infinitive with a modal.
jeden Tag | musste | ich | mit meinen Freunden | auf dem Sportplatz | spielen |
Making Statements (with compound sentences, that is, two subject/verb sets)
- Make a simple sentence (see above).
jeden Tag | spiele | ich | mit meinen Freunden | auf dem Sportplatz |
- Make another simple sentence.
mein Bruder und meine Schwester | gehen | immer | mit ihren Freunden | in die Bibliothek |
- Connect the two sentences with a comma and a coordinate conjunction. Notice that the coordinate conjunction does not affect the word order of either simple sentence. The conjugated verb is in the second position in both sentences.
| Jeden Tag spiele ich mit meinen Freunden auf dem Sportplatz, aber |
| mein Bruder und meine Schwester gehen immer mit ihren Freunden in die Bibliothek. |
Making Statements (with complex sentences, that is, one subject/verb set and one dependent [subordinate] clause [a subject/verb set that begins with a subordinate conjunction])
- Make one simple sentence.
jeden Tag | spiele | ich | mit meinen Freunden | auf dem Sportplatz |
- Make another simple sentence.
das Wetter | ist | schön |
- Choose a subordinate conjunction that shows the relationship of the two sentences, for example, wenn (when) or weil (because). Begin the subordinate clause with the subordinate conjunction and move the conjugated verb to the end of the clause.

weil | das Wetter | schön | ist |
- Attach the simple sentence and the subordinate clause with a comma. You may combine them in several ways:
Wenn das Wetter schön ist,spiele ich mit meinen Freunden auf dem Sportplatz. |
Weil das Wetter schön ist, spiele ich mit meinen Freunden auf dem Sportplatz. |
Jeden Tag spiele ich mit meinen Freunden auf dem Sportplatz, weil das Wetter schön ist. |
Jeden Tag, wenn das Wetter schön ist, spieleich mit meinen Freunden auf dem Sportplatz. |
