"This I Believe" Honors Student Essays
The radio series "This I Believe" began in 1951 when journalist Edward R. Murrow asked everyday citizens, statesmen and celebrities to share "the core beliefs that guide their daily lives." It continues now as a project of National Public Radio, Atlantic Public Media and This I Believe, Inc.  In 2006, the Honors Program adapted the format for its freshman writing courses, and the result included essays that have been broadcast on KACU-FM, our Abilene-area NPR station, and on iTunes U.

We hope you enjoy this collection of student writing and feel encouraged to sample others on NPR's site.

This I Believe

 Matthew Davis

Matthew Davis, Faith in Doubt. Fall 2006.

Faith is a choice to believe in spite of doubt. My faith may be shaken with doubt, but I continue to believe while I try to come to a greater understanding. . . .
 John Ferguson

John Ferguson, Frontier Ethic. Spring 2007.

With the coffee craze, it is easy to see how some people’s core values are reflected in their choice of coffee. Though I myself am not an avid coffeehouse visitor, I have picked up on a few trends: 8, 16, and 24 oz. trends that speak volumes about personal character. . . .
 Andrea Haugen

Andrea Haugen, The Delight Is in the Details. Fall 2006.

I believe in a good cup of coffee. I believe in friendly smiles. I believe in buttons. In some way or another, all of these have made immeasurable differences in my life and in the lives of those around me. What I place my belief in is hard to quantify but impossible to ignore. I believe in the little things. . . .

 Zach Hill
Zach Hill, A Father's Love. Spring 2007.
I believe in a father’s love.  I’ve come to believe in it more actually since I’ve been away from home.  The distance does something. I wouldn’t have guessed distance could strengthen a relationship. . . .
 Ashley Musick

Ashley Musick, A Life with Fewer Walls. Fall 2006.

I believe in tearing down the walls that make us lonely. Most of us built them before middle school. But just when it seems like they will always be impenetrable, I remember. What I really believe in is slumber parties. . . .

 Nathan Pickle

Nathan Pickle, Voice of the Soul. Fall 2006.

I believe that music is a powerful force, capable of bringing a lonely soul out of solitude and making a person feel in touch with other people. . . .

 Linly Stowe
Linly Stowe, It's a Small World. Spring 2007.
The first time I went to Disney World I was nine years old. I wanted to ride everything and feel that excitement that comes from every loop and twist. . . .
 Douglas Walton

Douglas Walton, Theory of Thought. Fall 2006.

This odyssey began not long ago in a local coffee shop. At this time I had begun to doubt some of my most firmly held beliefs. Was there really a God out there? Am I truly that significant in an infinitely expanding universe? . . .

 Michelle Woods

Michelle Woods, The Necessity of Uncertainty. Spring 2007.

Most aspects of the human experience such as personality, physical ability, and mental capacity are all essentially predetermined. Hard as we may try, it is nearly impossible to change who we are in regards to these characteristics. This is where uncertainty comes in. . . .
