Cokedale Mining Museum Commission

The Cokedale Museum Commission organized in 1984 and began operations soon after Cokedale was declared a historical district. The Commission's primary mission is to renovate the Gottlieb Mercantile and establish a coal mining museum. Beginning in 1991 a unique partnership began when the first Public History Field School took place in June of that year. Working with Abilene Christian University professor Dr. Vernon Williams, ACU students and the Commission are bringing the Coal Mining Museum to life. Using a 1907 photograph of the Mercantile building, students in 1993 reconstructed the stonework at the entrance to the building. Over the past few years, the Commission has secured grants to build exhibits, install new heating systems, add lighting and mount a major restoration of the structure. New grants will continue the restoration.
