2008 Freshman Common Reading
What is the Freshman Common Reading? The Freshman Common Reading is designed to introduce students to the rich intellectual life of Abilene Christian University. This common reading experience provides a beginning point for campus conversations which consider important topics, and introduces new students to what it means to be part of a university.
Freshmen and faculty who choose to participate will receive a free copy of the book and be invited to participate in a variety of activities related to the reading. The Freshman Common Reading will culminate when the authors come to campus. Participants are also invited to participate in a creative contest with scholarships awarded to the winners.
The book chosen for the 2008 Freshman Common Reading is "Same Kind of Different as Me" by Ron Hall and Denver Moore.
"This
is an amazing true story of a modern-day slave, an international art
dealer, and the unlikely woman who bound them together. It begins
outside a burning plantation hut in Louisiana…and an East Texas
Honky-tonk…and, without a doubt, in the heart of God. It unfolds in a
Hollywood hacienda…an upscale New York gallery…a downtown dumpster." |
