ACU students participate in annual Leadership Summit

summit_studentsMore than 140 juniors and seniors participated in Abilene Christian University’s annual Leadership Summit at Frontier Ranch in Buena Vista, Colo. Jan. 3-9. The week-long course offered by the College of Business Administration (COBA) is designed to provide learning and leadership development opportunities for students in a setting outside the classroom.

During the week, students participated in case studies, guided reflection, small group discussions, teaching sessions and sessions with business professionals. Mike Winegeart, assistant professor of marketing and director of COBA’s global programs, described the summit as a “spiritual boot camp” for students wanting to reach their leadership potential.

“At the summit students have uninterrupted time to focus on character, competence and calling,” said Winegeart. “The catalyst for these life-changing decisions is Christian CEOs who volunteer their time to mentor students at the summit.”

This year’s summit featured six ACU faculty members from COBA and four guest speakers. Guest speakers John Aden, CEO of Mac Tools, an automotive mechanic tools and equipment company, spoke on the topic “Leading an Organization.” Gary Skidmore, EVP of direct marketing company Harte-Hanks, spoke on the topic “Leading a Team;” Mike Haley, Focus on the Family, spoke on the topic “Leading to Change the World;” and Ginger Graham, CEO of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, spoke on the topic “Leading Self.”

Students said the combination of the speakers and environment at Frontier Ranch created a unique experience that helped them grow as leaders for the future.

“Leadership Summit challenged me to think realistically about how faith plays a role in every aspect of my life,” said Katie Eichelberger, junior marketing major from Houston.  “I was inspired by each and every speaker, and I felt God call me to leadership in ways I had never before considered.  This week is definitely one that will not be easily forgotten.”
