I'm here at ACU to pursue an evidence- and faith-based master's degree in social work. In searching for schools, ACU appealed most to me because of the unique, new program they offered. I got my undergraduate education at a state university and it was appealing to attend a private, Christian school.

I am interested in social work because I believe in what it stands for. Its guiding values include integrity, social justice and an appreciation for human dignity and worth. These are incorporated into a profession with vast possibilities as to how and where these values are practiced. Social workers can do so much on so many levels and I'm excited to have those opportunities.

The thing I like most about my social work professors is their ability to inspire. They have experience and passion to move students toward action. They truly care about change and it is contagious.

What I like best about our classes is that they not only teach us the history and forces of social issues, but they also teach us to use our voice to influence these things. The content of the classes is made interesting and valuable through the professor's encouragement to express opinions and think about the bigger picture. Classes are laid back and personal.

My first field placement was at the Community Action Program of Taylor County. Services range from utility assistance and energy efficiency to family enrichment and individual development. It offers many services under one roof. It has been amazing to interact with clients that come for temporary assistance or case management and realize that life happens to everyone.

My most memorable field experience has been the case management clients. Their stories are so amazing and to watch them seek a better life with such determination is inspiring. They are constantly motivated and driven in the face of adversity and they have taught me a lot.
