Class of 2006
Hometown: Daytona Beach, FL
Activities:
I knew that I wanted an education that included Christian morals. There are so many opportunities at ACU to learn more about what it means to be a disciple of Christ and serve
his people. It is an environment where you can explore why am I here on earth and what is my
purpose. It is not just for the degree, but for the way God can communicate to you through
the people, the faculty, and the community that is ACU.
God has blessed me with an unquenchable love for people. I receive the most joy in life when I am working towards helping someone. As a Christian my goal is to love the Lord with everything in me and I do that by loving his people here on earth, especially those who are in need. Social work is a profession that stands up for those who cannot stand up for themselves—children, the elderly, the hurting, the disabled, anyone who is being oppressed
and is in need of justice. I want to have a career that fulfills my life’s purpose and isn’t just a
paycheck. I want to be where the hurting are and help them have a better quality of life.
I enjoy the smaller size classes here. We have great discussions that include everyone in the room. I enjoy getting to know my professors better and that is possible because of the small faculty-to-student ratio. I like how our classes focus on looking at an individual in the context of all of their surroundings. You gain a real understanding of all the factors that play into
people’s needs, whether they be physical, psychological or socially contextual.
I have enjoyed all of the hands-on observation and experience I have gotten. Many of the classes require you to work with agencies to learn about what they do and how they do it. I enjoy being in the "real world" encountering "real people." I have gotten a closer look at several agencies in town, including the Betty Hardwick Center MHMR, Christian Homes of Abilene, Hendrick Hospice, Harmony Family Services and several others. I feel like I have a good idea of what my career will be like. I have several friends in other majors who have
never stepped a foot inside the places that do the type of work they plan to do until after
graduation day. I am glad I have a realistic image of what social work is really about.
I like being in a small department where you really feel like your professors are a part of your life. My professors have been so helpful in helping me discover what it is I want to do with my degree and how I want to get there. They are almost always available to talk through dilemmas and difficulties. Each of them serves as a good example of what a Christian should be.
