the Empty Bowls Project says "Eat Soup, End Hunger."
The Empty Bowls Project aims to end world hunger. The Social Work Club volunteered at the first annual Abilene event on February 23, 2008. The Social Work Club set up a booth to raise awareness about responsible and compassionate consumerism and, in particular, Fair Trade Certification (visit acu.edu/fairtrade).
According to the Empty Bowls Project, the idea is simple. "Participants create ceramic bowls, then serve a simple meal of soup and bread. Guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always Empty Bowls in the world. In exchange for a meal and the bowl, the guest gives a suggested minimum donation of ten dollars."
This year, the Abilene Empty Bowls event raised over $8,600. Seventy-five percent of the money raised will be donated to Big Country charities to help end hunger. The remainder will be given to Heifer International (more info at our Global Community Center under "The Earth & Everything In It"), an organization that provides livestock and other help for families throughout the world. | View IMAGE GALLERY |
