Snow Skiing

We celebrated our 30th anniversary EXSC 239 ski trip to Red River in January 2005.  This class gives ACU students and friends the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Sangre de Christo Mountains in northeastern New Mexico.  For five days in January, one hundred plus students, faculty, and friends will meet in Red River, New Mexico, for four days of ski lessons, free skiing, good food, and devotionals.  This event marks the climax to the fall snow skiing class.

Information from instructor Dr. Lynn Luttrell

We ski all day and meet once each evening for a time of devotional, praise, worship, and  announcements.  Since Red River is a small, family, group-oriented ski resort, everyone generally uses the same chairlifts making it is easy to meet up with friends and see each other several times a day, regardless of ability.  The trip is taken after the busy holiday season, so there are very few, if any lift lines at any point during the trip.  Most skiers ski down and immediately get on the lift for another trip up without waiting at all.  Because the crowds are so small, and we usually take over 100 people from ACU, it seems like we have the mountain to ourselves.

The lodging has rooms with kitchens, so people have options of eating out or cooking in.  Most basic dishes, utensils,  pots and pans are stocked in the rooms.  The lodges are a little over a mile down main street from the ski area.  There are a number of good locally-owned restaurants if one wants to eat out.

We also take "tag-alongs" for those who don't need the EXSC credit at ACU.  Family, friends, church groups, etc. are all welcome (people don't have to be connected to ACU).  We simply ask that they follow our ACU rules and are willing to fit in with our group's environment.  Many take advantage of the group rates and enjoy the fun, fellowship, and bonding that goes with a group trip with fellow Christians.
