Course Descriptions

BMFT 601 Pre-Internship. Supervised experience in a variety of real counseling situations. Awareness, listening skills, paraphrase, reflection, and sensitivity are especially emphasized and developed. In-depth consideration will be placed upon analysis and evaluation of research, ethical concerns, leadership approaches and problems arising with group leadership. MFT majors only.

BMFT 602 Internship I. Supervised practice in marriage and family therapy. Emphasis on a wide variety of experience. MFT majors only.

BMFT 603 Internship II. Supervised practice in marriage and family therapy. Emphasis on a wide variety of experience. MFT majors only.

BMFT 604 Internship III. Supervised practice in marriage and family therapy. Emphasis on a wide variety of experience. MFT majors only.

BMFT 605 Internship IV. Supervised practice in marriage and family therapy. Emphasis on a wide variety of experience. MFT majors only.

BMFT 610 Pre-Marriage and Marriage Therapy. An introduction to the theories and techniques of marriage and family therapy as applied to the work of those persons who deal primarily with people. Designed especially for ministers, teachers, supervisors, church and social workers.

BMFT 634 Addictive Disorders. Designed to address the spectrum of addictive disorders (chemicals, relationships, food and sex) with the focus on the biological, social and psychological aspects of the addictive process. Emphasis will include diagnosis and treatment strategies from a systemic perspective.

BMFT 639 Family Theory/General Systems Theory. A comprehensive exploration of theory in family studies and therapy. The role of theory in empirical investigation, conceptual framework, and strategies of theory building useful in the interdisciplinary study of marriage and family behavior will be examined.

BMFT 641 Family Therapy I. A study of supportive counseling principles and methodology in the area of functional family problems and needs. A systems approach will be utilized.

BMFT 643 Professional Ethics and Law. A survey of the professional ethics and laws relative to the practice of marriage and family therapy.

BMFT 645 Marital and Family Assessment. An overview of administration, scoring and interpretation of assessment instruments used in marriage problems. Some emphasis on report writing.

BMFT 651 Sexual Therapy. The Christian-oriented implementation of contemporary sexual therapy in formal and informal settings.

BMFT 660 Therapy with Non-Traditional Families. This course provides a comprehensive theoretical and therapeutic framework to assess and treat people who have concerns related to divorce, single-parent or remarried family life.

BMFT 661 Family Therapy II. Intense exposure to at least three currently-practiced techniques of Family Therapy.  Prerequisite: consent of MFT program's graduate advisor.

BMFT 662 Family Life Cycle. Equipping the marriage and family student with an understanding of how to integrate the individual, marital and family development cycles into clinical case conceptualization, diagnosis and treatment.

BMFT 663 Cultural Diversity. Theoretical influences from gender and ethnic clinical literature are examined in relation to "normative" family interactions. Family therapy techniques are reevaluated from this exploration.

BMFT 665 Family Therapy Across the Life Cycle . An overview of individual and family developmental stages with therapy skills emphasis for families and chlidren, youth and older adults.
