Deon serves the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy as a clinical supervisor, where he is known for his informal, collaborative supervision style where he emphasizes spirituality and the self-of-the-therapist. Deon graduated with his MMFT from ACU in 2003, and since that time, he has had a range of clinical experience including offering counseling services through Highland Church of Christ as well as providing group and individual counseling at FaithWorks of Abilene, a local faith-based nonprofit that assists the underemployed in identifying and accomplishing career goals. When working with clients, Deon’s theory of choice is narrative. In addition to his clinical work, Deon has served as the Director of the Office of Career and Academic Development at ACU since 2007. Deon also has a degree in theology from the Free State University in South Africa and has held numerous ministry positions throughout his career.
In addition to his professional interests, Deon is dedicated to community service and volunteerism. Since living in Abilene, he has volunteered at Breakfast on Beach Street (BOBS), where he prepares and serves breakfast to the homeless and poor each week. Prior to moving to the United States, he was involved in several volunteer organizations in South Africa. In his free time, Deon enjoys fixing things around the house and “everything having to do with water.” Deon is married to Esstell, and they have two children, Pieter and Lene, both of whom are ACU students.
