Wendell earned his bachelor's degree from Midwestern State University in 1965. He received his master's degree from Abilene Christian University in 1967, his B.D. from Vanderbilt in 1969 and his Ph.D. from Southern Methodist University in 1981. Wendell worked as a minister at the Western Hills Church of Christ in Temple, Texas, and at the South National Church of Christ in Springfield, Missouri before coming to ACU.
Wendell and his wife, Sandra, have three sons: Joshua, Nathan, and Adam.
