Dr. Mathews began teaching at ACU as a Missionary in Residence in 1972. He became a faculty member in 1980 and served as director of the Center of Missions Education from 1980 - 1984. He was chairman of the Department of Missions from 1984 - 1992. He has edited the Mission Strategy Bulletin, Journal of Applied Missiology, and Keeping in Touch. Dr. Mathews has written several chapters in mission books, articles for mission journals, and entries for the Evangelical Dictionary of World Missions, as well as the Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement.

Before coming to ACU, he served as a minister for churches in Florida, Texas, and Ohio. He has worked as a missionary in Guatemala and has been a deacon, mission committee chairman, and elder. He conducts Equipping Mission Leaders workshops and Church Growth seminars both here and abroad.  His travels include speaking and researching activities in 182 countries.
